Bushelon Fu- neral Home is directing. on Wednesday, March 27, 2002. He was the son of Claire Mapes Nice and the late Judge Charles M. Nice, Jr. of Birmingham.

He was born in Birmingham, attended Indian Springs School, graduated from the University of North Carolina, and received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alabama. He served in the United States Army. He was Assistant Attorney General for the Court of Appeals for the State of Florida until he retired and returned to Birmingham in 1991. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity, the Florida Bar Association, and St. John's Episcopal Church in Tallahassee, Florida.

He is survived by his mother; his brother, Pete Adams Nice (Lisa); nephew, Cayman AdamsNice; niece, Alice Adams-Nice. Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials sent to St. Mary's on the Highlands Episcopal Church. Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel, 879-3401, in Homewood.

HATCH, WILLIAM AVERELL HARRIMAN, age 58, passed away HODGE, DANIEL "BUDDY" age 61, passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2002 at his residence in Quinton. He was formerly of Columbus, GA. and resided in Alabama for the past 22 years. Survived by: wife, Stella Rose; four sons, Dan, Allen, Jason and Jeff, all of Columbus, mother, Estelle Fuller of Douglasville, two sisters; and four grandchildren. Visitation will be held Friday, March 29, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

HOPPER, WILLIAM "BILL" age 73, of Anniston, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2002. He was a retired manager from South Central Bell with 37 years of service. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Anniston. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp for 21 years during the Korean War, retired as a Sargent Major.

He was an outstanding husband and father. Survivors include his wife, Mildred M. Hopper of Anniston, two daughters, Janie Hopper Pontero of Anniston and Connie Hopper Brown (Wade) of Trussville, son, William E. Hopper, Jr. (Kathy) of Anniston, two sisters, Ida Dawes (Beric) of Chelmsford, Mass.

and Jean Cole of Centerville, two brothers, M.D. Hopper (Sarah) of Alabaster, AL. and James D. Hopper of Chapel Hill, seven grandchildren; numerous family members and close friends. Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East.

HUGHES, BURRELL age 73, of Birmingham, retired United Methodist Minister, died March 27, 2002.

He was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on May 28, 1928, the son of Burrell B. and Irene Hamner Hughes. He received his B.S. degree from the University North Alabama and his Master of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 1964. He was a Resident Fellow at the Harvard University Divinity School in 1985.

He served as a minister in the North Alabama Conference for forty years, serving churches in Tuscaloosa, Florence, Gadsden, and Birmingham. At the time of his retirement from the active ministry, he was Associate Minister of Highlands United Methodist Church in Birmingham. During his retirement, he served as Executive Secretary of the Methodist Educational Leave Society of the Dixon Foundation. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his service in the Marine Corps, he served in the Alabama Highway Patrol before entering the ministry.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Baird Hughes; two sons, John Mark Hughes and his wife, Vicky of Hoover, James Wesley Hughes and his wife, Catherine of Homewood; one daughter, Lynn Spires and her husband, Spin of Vestavia Hills; six grandchildren, Jennifer and Jameson Hughes Ann Casey and Molly Hughes and Kendal and Carter Spires. He is also survived by three sisters, Irene Abt of Cullman, Grace Case of Tuscaloosa, and Martha Jackson of Knoxville. Funeral services will be held at Highlands United Methodist Church at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 30th with Dr. Hughey Reyand Rev.

Ann recently retired from HYCON, after helping found the company and working as a bookkeeper for 16 years. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Terry L. Hyatt; son, Brian Hyatt (Heather); daughter, Amanda Hyatt who is a senior at Auburn University; brothers, Larry Gene Smith and Bobby H. Smith. Services will be Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 2:00 P.M.

IRWIN, LEONARD, 80, of Amelia Island, Florida, died on March 26, 2002. Leonard was a native of Pensacola, Florida, son of Basil Lee and Emmie Green Irwin. Leonard is survived by his wife, the former Johnnie McDonald of Birmingham, Alabama; his daughters, Michele Griswell of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Gay Irwin of Wake Forest, North Carolina; his sister, Nona Irwin Storey of Laguna Nigel, California and four grandsons.

He was a graduate of Auburn University, class of 1947 and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, class of 1955. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Leonard Irwin was a pastor in various Southern Baptist churches. He joined the North American Mission Board (formerly the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board) in Atlanta, Georgia in 1960. He retired as Vice President of Planning in 1989.

After retirement, Leonard and his wife moved to Westminster, South Carolina where they were faithful members of the First Baptist Church of Westminster. Leonard enjoyed traveling, tennis, fishing and boating. A memorial service, conducted by Dr. Carlisle Driggers and Rev. Mark Ford, will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the First Baptist Church of Westminster, South Carolina.

Constantly laboring to do God's will, he served faithfully at First Baptist as Deacon, Sunday Teacher, President of Number One Usher Board, Junior Usher Advisor, Bible College student, Minister's Conference attendee and worked throughout the state with the Layman's Department. A Brother of Steele Scepter Lodge he was vital in organizing the Lewis' Family reunion. Three children predeceased him, Celestine, Wanda and Alfred, Ill.
