Louisville, Kentucky Travis McGowrn, left, of Marbury and Traci Luster of Wetumpka stand next to Toyotas NASCAR Craftsman Tundra race truck during the 2004 National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky which was attended by more than 50,000 people (October 27-29). McGowin is a member of the Billingsley FFA chapter; Luster belongs to the Wetumpka chapter. Toyotas focus at the National FFA Convention centered on community service, both at its display booth and through a student workshop. Four non-profit groups, The National Arbor Day Foundation, American Cancer Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and Kids Vote USA, joined in this effort, offering advice and ideas on how to start community service projects, In addition to the Tundra NASCAR race truck, Toyota also showcased a pair of trucks: the Area hobby fanners hold info workshop For some time nov Elmore County and surrounding areas novice and hobby farmers have been in need for assistance with information concerning problems dealing with their small farm animals. The Elmore County Extensions funding has been cut back and it makes it very difficult for them to stretch themselves any further than they have already.

The desire to help and assist is there but unfortunately, only so much can be done with such a short staff and so little time in a day. But, help is on the horizon. Clint and Carol Allen of Wetumpka decided to do something to help. They are a retired couple who had always dreamed of moving to the country and having the space and freedom to raise small farm animals and enjoy the experience of working with nature. They wanted to be able to share nature in its purest form with their grandchildren and let them experience it themselves.

Mrs. Allen has a particular love for chickens while Mr. Allen loves his horse, his rabbits and quail. Their first spring chicks and baby turkeys did not turn out as they hoped. The excessive rains this spring made the new birds vulnerable to a bacteria, that thrives in rainy weather and the Allens lack of knowledge, subsequently, left them with very few healthy birds.

Mrs. Allen called Rick Beauchamp at the Elmore County Extension and he was helpful enough to call a representative from south Alabama who was familiar with their problem. Immediately, she set out to repay Mr. Beauchamps kindness. Through the cooperation of the Elmore County Extension and Auburn University Poultry Division, there now exists an informal information workshop calling itself the Hobby Farmers Questions and Answers Exchange.

The meetings will be held on the second Thursday of each month. The group will meet at the Elmore County Extension Auditorium on Queen Ann Road, off Highway 14 West in Wetumpka. The first meeting will be held on the tenth of February at 7 p.m. featuring Dr. Hess from Auburn University Poultry Division.

All surrounding area hobby farmers are welcomed to attend and bring their questions and concerns. The group also encourages everyone to share their solutions or suggestions with the session. The groups goal is to incorporate scientific information with proven old home remedies. i.avx32on LGVX3200 Color Screen Flip Phone Only 19.99 With new 2 yr. activation.
