"I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast, for I intend to go in harm's way Although, "In Harm's Way" was not one of the best known of John Paul Jones' phrases, director Otto Preminger has made it famous. Preminger, the independent maker of such films as "Advise and Consent," "Exodus" and "The Man with The Golden Arm," now brings a star-studded war film to the public. All indications are that this will be a superb picture.

"In Harm's Way" is the recreation of Dec. 7, 1941, and the Japanese Attack on the Navy Air Base at Kaneohe Bay on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. This site was overshadowed by Pearl Harbor, though the first shots in the Pacific phase of World War II were fired here. The first Marine killed in the conflict died at Kaneohe. It was the first area to be attacked, the first base to shoot down a Japanese plane, and it was there that an aviation ordnanceman, John William Finn, won the war's first Medal of Honor.

Preminger is a stickler for authenticity and he was surrounded by numerous navymen as technical advisers for this picture. He wanted to be sure that none of the familiar movie boners would find a place in his production. If military-men could spot a weak point, Preminger maintained, then the general public might be suspicious, too. John Wayne and Patricia Neal have two of the major roles, backed up by notables as Kirk Douglas, Brandon deWildc, Paula Prentiss, Dana Andrews, Stanley Hollo-way, Burgess Meredith, Henry Fonda, Hugh O'Brien and Franchot Tone. The film is based on James Bassctt's best-selling novel of the same name, which was heralded as a sea-war story among the best of all time.

It is a drama of men and women caught up in a critical moment of history, before and after Pearl Harbor. "In Harm's Way" should draw a credible crowd to the Paramount during its run. COLLEGIATE EVOLUTION Walt Disney brings Merlin Jones back to the vscrccn, this time at the Empire in "Monkey's Uncle." It's a delightful family comedy, that will especially appeal to the teen-age crowd because of Annette Funicello and the Beach Boys. Tommy Kirk is Merlin, a screwball college genius who adopts a chimpanzee, Stanley. The judge grants the If.

Since he knows several college students who display the intelligence of chimps, the Judge goes along with the gag. The inventive Jones rigs up a phonograph machine to electronic hair curlers, hooks it up to Stanley and puts him to sleep with a how-to-behave-like-a-civilized-hu-man recording. It works. The football crazy judge hears of the hair-curler experiment and decides this may be the perfect way to get two muscle-bound knothcad players through their exams without cheating. Otherwise, the team goes kaput.

How Stanley helps save the team, how Merlin acquires $20 million for the college and how Merlin and Annette hit it off combine for the finale. MacLAINE STEALS SHOW Shirley Maclaine alone makes "The Yellow Rolls-Royce" at the Capri worth seeing. She shows her superb acting ability at its best in this. Who but her could convince the audience she could care less about the lovely Italian countryside, the ancient buildings, the Leaning Tower? Journal staffer Al Alcorn had some interesting comments on the picture: "Nobody lives happily ever after in this movie but in the meantime they sure have fun in the back seat of the Yellow Rolls-Royce.

"It's the life story of a fun-loving automobile whose commodious backseat accommodates three sets of lovers over three decades. "The first duet is the wife of a very British diplomat and her lover, who find the shade-drawn back seat the only private during a day at the races. However, it's not private enough, as the very British husband, played excellently by Rex Harrison, finds his very French wife, Jeanne Moreau, bedded comfortably with one of the Foreign Office secretaries. "Cut, 10 years and 20,205 miles later, the gallant automobile is for sale in Genoa, Italy. Up step Scott, MacLaine and Art Carney, as an American gangster, his moll and bodyguard respectively.

The lover this time is "Stephano," played by Alain Dclon an amoral character, or so explains Carney. While the boss is in Miami knocking off a rival mobster, MacLaine plays with Stephano in the back scat, of course. "Switch to the Yugoslav frontier in 1941 with Nazis bombing every one and a very Republican Mrs. Millet blessing the name of Roosevelt as a Yugoslav patriot (Omar Sharif) sleeps in the trunk.
