montgomeryadvertiser.com Thursday, January 6, 2011 7A Twain From Page 2A News about NewSouth's edition of the Twain classics first appeared in the trade magazine Publishers Weekly earlier this week, Williams said. From there, the story took on a life of its own on the Internet. National and international news outlets including The New York Times, NBC, CBS and ABC News BBC Radio have been contacting Gribben since Tuesday, and he continued to respond to interview requests from various, outlets much of the Wednesday. Both Gribben and Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Thompson appeared on "NBC Nightly News" on Wednesday. Montgomery Public Schools spokesman Tom Salter said Thompson supchange.

Thompson believes that it would allow more parents and students to appreciate the book rather than dismissing it because of the slur, said. "Huckleberry Finn" is not currently part of the Alabama course of study, Salter added. Gribben explains in his introduction that after teaching Twain for years, he has seen how the repeated use of the word has the effect of alienating many students from the book. The racial epithet is considered so offensive that it has become nearly impossible for schools to include the two Twain classics on reading lists, Gribben argues. Many middle and high school teachers across Alabama have told him that they simply no longer assign the books, he said.

The word "slave" was chosen to replace the N-word partly because it retains the effect of conveying the racism Twain intended to portray in the book, Gribben wrote. Another Twain scholar, professor Stephen Railton at the University of Virginia, said Gribben was well spected, but called the new version "a terrible Moon From Page 2A set up and I'm not making this up just before you get to the security area. (Because nothing says party like a TSA worker with his hands down your pants.) And to help out firsttime flyers, of which there are sure to be many, Cox and Montgomery Regional have provided a list of travel tips. Things like reminding passengers to check the TSA's website for limitations on carry-on items, like liquids, and prohibited items, like assault rifles and scissors. Also, for the travelers with young kids, they suggest purchasing something for them to play with.

On behalf of those sitting around you, I suggest that purchase be a babysitter. The tips from the airport folks are nice, but they're not enough. I know this because I'm already in Arizona to cover the game, and noticed a problem or two flying out. So, I think I can help with a few tips of my own. First, don't put anything in a checked bag that can't be kicked, rolled or dropped from a two-story building, because paying checked bag fee does not a absolve the airline baggage handler of his responsibility to treat your luggage like tackling dummy.

Second, if you happen through an airport that has an accelerated walkway, don't just stand on the thing like you're on some sort of carnival ride, keep walking. If you're not going to walk, get out of the way so everyone else can walk. Third, despite what you've seen on TV, the majority of TSA workers are nice people who really don't want to touch anyone's junk, so ease up on the attitude. Yes, some of TSA folks are rude, but most of them are decent people. And your experience with them can be tolerable if you just take off your shoes and coat, remove your laptop from the bag, stick your change and keys in your carry-on bag and act like a decent human being.

If you don't, two words: Cavity search. You follow these three tips and the ones from Montgomery Regional, you'll most likely be a safe and happy traveler. And most importantly, there will be little chance of anything, or anyone, preventing you from enjoying all the craziness. Josh Moon's "Just Saying" appears each Sunday and Thursday. He can be reached by e-mail at Funerals From Page 5A Directing www.leak-mc.com LAMBERT, Austin 89, died Sunday, January 2, 2011.
