in Prattville and aluminum to Wesson Recycling in Tallassee. Mcinnis processed nearly 153 tons of materials in August, said Peggy Prescott, Carmichael's secretary. "You'd be amazed how many aluminum cans it takes to make a ton," she added. Using an aluminum industry average of 32.57 cans per pound, it takes 65,140 recycled cans to make one ton. State inmates process materials that Mcinnis cannot sell.

"It does provide them mean" ingful said Brian Corbett, spokesman for the Alabama Department of Corrections. He said the inmates aren't paid for the work. But Corbett said, "Recycling obviously is a good thing. It helps the community. It helps the environment and every little bit The spokesman said the corrections department has been working with Mcinnis for about the past five years, providing inmates for the Montgomery Work Center, located behind Kilby Correctional Facility in Mount Meigs.

Prescott said the inmates processed more than 115 tons of material in August. Cline said the material is hauled to the state's correctional facility in the Elmore community. "They do everything that we don't do except glass," he said. Cline said the glass goes to the landfill because the nearest recycling facility for glass is in Atlanta. "It costs about double to ship what you'd get back out of the load," he said.

Montgomery's environmental efforts date back to the end of the 1960s, when it joined the Keep America Beautiful campaign. The Clean City Commission was formed in 1975, and Carmichael became involved in its efforts the next year. "This is something that has been very dear to my heart," Carmichael said. The city provides $62,654 yearly to the Clean City Commission. Montgomery County is proposing a $5,000 allocation, which is the same as was approved last year, Melanie Beasley, the county's spokeswoman said.

The Clean City Commission also seeks further financial assistance, which Carmichael said is more difficult for her today because the state grant funding she sought in the past is now limited to counties with populations of less than 50,000. "It's very difficult," she said of getting the funding. Docket: Forums welcomed From Page 1B berland County Schools in Fayetteville, N.C. After Carter announced his retirement, the district hired a Wisconsin- consulting firm in June to help aid in the search for a new superintendent. Proact Search of Milwaukee is being paid $30,000 by the district and conducted all background and historical checks on each candidate.

The firm also helped the school board narrow the field of applicants to semifinalists and then to finalists. Jason Woodland, a Montgomery resident who attended the public forums and had a chance to meet the candidates, said he would be happy with any decision the board makes. "We need someone who is strong and committed to making our schools better, both on the inside and on the outside," he said. "I feel confident that each of those four finalists will be able to do that." Miller said he is hoping for a unanimous decision from the board on who it would like to see lead Montgomery schools over the course of the next few years, but would not say which candidate board members were lean-, ing towards. Thursday morning's special meeting will be separate from the board's regular meeting at 6 p.m.

Photo: Lawyer says stolen picture is private property From Page 18 Conner said it is her conten- collecting information on his case. Federal prosecutors have tried to have the site removed twice, claiming it was intended to intimidate and threaten witnesses. DeJohn's motion only seeks to have his photos removed, not the entire Web site. "The government cannot introduce illegally obtained evidence in a criminal proceeding. Why then can the defendant utilize an illegally obtained photo to seek evidence in his defense?" the motion asked.

The motion was filed on Monday and no hearing date has been set on the issue. DeJohn's attorney, Roianne Conner; said she still had unanswered questions about how the photo passed from the police department to the Web site. "There are still questions I don't know the answer to. Like was he (Salem) paid?" Conner said. Conner said she hoped the judge would grant her a hearing so she could subpoena and question the parties involved in the photo leak.

tion that the photo was illegally obtained. stole that picture. It was not his property to take and he took it without permission from Mr. DeJohn or the Montgomery Police Department," Conner said. Carmichael's lead attorney, who has defended existence of the Web site in the past, declined to comment on the motion.

"I haven't had a chance through it," said Stephen Glassroth, who was out of the state on Tuesday. In a news conference last month. Salem stated that he did not know why the investigator for Carmichael's defense a former police officer requested the picture. Controversy over Carmichael's Web site, which is designed to resemble a wanted poster, is not new. But the newness of the concept of a Web site seeking information for a defendant's case is new, and therefore there has been little case law on the issue.

During the prosecution's attempt to take the site down, neither the defense nor prosecution could find a similar case. Relief: Word is spreading of spending eerie nights in the dark, grilling food before it had a chance to spoil and clearing trees from roads and yards. In Camden, about 15 miles west of Furman, Mayor Henrietta Blackmon said she believes state and federal emergency management officials are working hard to help storm victims. But she said finding and getting help to victims along the county's isolated back roads is an enormous task. "They are sending ice trucks out to those areas, but how do you get the people together to get the ice? Some of these little places don't even have a country store," Blackmon said Tuesday.

In Furman, there is one small country store, Arnold's One Stop, but owner Moses Arnold said his power had been out since Thursday and that much of the store's food had spoiled in the late summer heat. Arnold was open, mostly selling soft drinks he was keeping cool thanks to a generator. Sitting in her car in the store's parking lot, 67-year-old Ruth Hudson said she had to haul her drinking water from a church in Pine Apple, about 10 miles away, in the days after the hurricane. "I don't have anything, no telephone service, no water, no power," Hudson said. "I have been miserable for the last four days, but happy because I thank God he spared me," said Hudson, a retired school teacher.

From Page 3B Montgomery, told similar tales car, the rain poured through. A black tarp now covers the hole over the living room. With no insurance, Moton said their only hope for food and repairs was to get help from federal or state officials. Federal Emergency Management Agency officials had been asking storm victims to call 1-800-621-FEMA to apply for assistance, but with no phone service and no power to run a television, Moton knew nothing about the phone number. Mike Hall, coordinating officer for FEMA, said the agency has 100 community relations workers in Alabama, including 12 in Wilcox County, and one of their jobs is to reach people in isolated areas.

He said the agency expects to have 250 community relations workers in Alabama by next week. "They are going door-to-door, store front-to-storefront, giving people that telephone number," Hall said. Moton said she was waiting patiently and feels some progress is being made. A state emergency management agency truck came Sunday and left some ice and MREs. "They are not very good," said Eula Steele, Renna Moton's mother, who lives next door.
