a a a a a a a a a a montgomeryadvertiser.com Monday, July 9, 2007 5B Black newspaper owner and civil rights advocate dies at 80 The Associated Press JACKSON, Miss. Charles Tisdale, an Alabama native who fought for civil rights as owner and publisher of Mississippi's oldest black-owned newspaper, died Saturday. He was 80. Tisdale collapsed last week while undergoing dialysis. He had been on life support until his family decided to take him off Saturday night.

Tisdale took over the Jackson Advocate in the late-1970s, an outspoken critic of elected officials, both black and white. Activist Charles Evers, brother of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, said Tisdale was concerned about the welfare of all citizens, not just blacks. For 20 years, Tisdale had a talk show on Evers' radio station, WMPR in Jackson, where he often took elected leaders to task for not effectively serving their community. "Before the Jackson Advocate, there was no coverage for black folks. Because of Mr.

Tisdale's stance and fight, the newspaper has enlightened us and is a vehicle to keep us informed," Evers said. Tisdale faced repercussions for his outspokenness. Tisdale often said he was the target of death threats. His newspaper office near downtown Jackson was firebombed at least twice. The latest was in 1998, when gasoline was poured over the furniture and molotov cocktails were thrown through windows.

The 1998 attack caused Beloved: Volunteer aided by prayers From Page 1B Over the last seven months, his weight dropped more than 50 pounds, and he's had a hard time eating or doing much else. His weight now is up from 120 pounds to 145. It didn't take long for news of Dollar's condition to spread around town. Calls came in. Friends stopped by.

Once people knew what happened, they responded with something that money can't buy love and prayers. A local resident who has been one of Dollar's fans for years loves to toot his horn. "If you look up 'decent human being' in the dictionary, his picture would be there," says John Wilcox, an official with the Tallapoosa County Board of Education. "He's an awesome, outstanding gentleman." Former Dadeville High School Principal Jim Childers said Dollar's work at the school helped in many ways. He is confident his friend will recover.

"A lot of people with his physical problems would have quit," said Childers. "But he's a tough little fighter, and he won't." Flattery can be embarrassing at times, especially for modest people like Larry Dollar. But, in times like these, it's just what a doctor might order to lift a patient's spirits. Churches throughout Dadeville also have responded by holding prayer sessions for him and asking for spiritual assistance as he struggles through his recovery period. At one point, Dollar's kidneys began to fail and he was put on dialysis.

He weathered that physical storm and now is concentrating on adjusting to his new liver. "I'm trying to get my strength back right now and am able to walk a mile and a half a day," said Dollar, as he relaxed on a couch in his living room. "It hasn't been easy, but I'm doing the best I can." Medication is helping, but Dollar wonders how many pills his body can hold each day. At the moment, he's taking 26 of them from the time he gets up until the time he goes to bed. "Thank God and Blue Cross," said Dollar, who estimates his medical bills at the moment have soared well past the $400,000 mark.

The couple's love story is something special. Sharon, who taught math in Dadeville for many years, was left a widow with two young children when her first husband was killed in an accident. Sharon found love a second time when she met Larry. The two have one child of their own and are proud, doting grandparents. It all adds a couple of Dollars who are worth millions in the eyes of their friends in Dadeville.

Clinton Moses, of Jackson, later pleaded guilty to the crime and told authorities that a member of the Jackson City Council had paid him $500 to commit the firebombing. Then-council member Louis Armstrong was never charged in the case.
