And your life is the same old mess. Last year's recycled resolution to exercise more and lose weight went off the tracks by March. The new job is, to put it kindly, the pits of hell, with your boss as the head devil-in-charge. Worst of all, you got involved with the wrong person (yes, again), and he or she is making you utterly miserable, but you can't seem to break things off. It's so unfair.

You're a good person who does not deserve any of this. So how did it happen? "I don't know!" you moan. "It just happened." Well, here's a flash: Relationships, good or bad, don't "just happen." Neither do habits, good or bad. Miss Rose Gunter Lawson graduate work at Western Illinois University. He resides in New York City and is a database analyst with Minolta, Inc.

The key is recognizing the negative patterns and learning how to analyze them and break the cycle of behavior. Here are Platkin's five principles: Patterns: Recognize, review, and evaluate various stages of your life. Reflect on those stages, and look for underlying negative patterns that repeat themselves. Do you consistently choose the wrong partners, romantically or professionally? Are you a "yo-yo" dieter who gains, then loses weight over and over again? Failure: Don't be afraid to risk failure. Successful people must be willing to take chances and to fail occasionally.

Learn to view failure as an opportunity to learn as an integral part of becoming an achiever. Responsibility: Focus on individual responsibility. This allows you accept that only you are responsible for the choices you make in life. Only then, Platkin says, is real change possible. "It's not about discipline and willpower, or about blaming yourself," he stresses.

"It's about empowering yourself." What about the things in life you can't control? "I didn't choose to have cancer," you may say. "I didn't choose to have my parent or spouse die." No, but you can control your responses to life crises. You can choose your attitude toward treating an illness, your way of dealing with grief or depression. Goals: Strategize to reach your goals. Achievement is planned for, visualized, and relentlessly pursued, Platkin says.

"Do a mental rehearsal athletes do it all the time," he says. "Pick a scenario, maybe about your weakest point, like latenight snacking. Write down in detailed form what you'll do when you get the urge to snack even 'Plan B' it and rehearse it in your head." Platkin says goals must be S.M.A.R.T.: specific, motivating, achievable, rewarding, and tactical. Don't just say, "I'm going to lose weight." Say, "I am going to lose 20 pounds over six months." Cut out 400 calories a equivalent of a soft drink and an ice-cream snack and you can reach that manageable goal. Make the process rewarding, and keep your changes modest and incremental.

I Achievement: When you understand that achievement is the end result of action-oriented behavior, you can develop specific strategies to help you be "opportunity "When you start realizing you have freedom of choice in everything you do, you have a much healthier outlook on things," Platkin says. "There's a burden of knowledge that comes with accepting responsibility, but also a huge freedom."
