LIFESTYLE Sunday, April 22, 2001 Montgomery Advertiser Phi Delta Kappa presents 21 debs, 4 kings THE XINOS Burton Armer Erica Davis Evan Davis 1 .4 1 By Elizabeth Via Brown Special to Montgomery Advertiser Culminating a three-year program, 21 girls, Xinos, and four boys, Kudos were presented last night at the 30th annual cotillion sponsored by Montgomery's Beta Beta Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa a national teachers' sorority. A program for high school students, the participants become affiliated as lOth-graders and are presented in formal gowns and tuxedos at a cotillion when they are seniors. For three years, the participants are coached by members of the sorority, who take the teen-agers under their wings and encourage them to improve educational achievements; to live by ethical standards exemplifying the sorority's ideals; participate in a wide variety of cultural and community activities and to develop social, educational and family responsibility. Gloria Lawrence is the ba-sileus, or president, of the chapter, which began the program to focus on the needs of young people. By encouraging the participants to become active in civic and community affairs, the sorority hopes to inspire educational, ethical and moral, spiritual and social standards in today's youth.

Parents of the participants are also recognized during the program and the fathers and their daughters share a special dance.
