Buckner-Rush Funeral Homes has charge of the arrangements. new career in politics ASSOCIATED PRESS BIRMINGHAM Former Auburn University football coach Pat Dye is having second thoughts about starting a new career in politics. On Oct. 16, Dye said he was getting encouragement from friends and family to seek statewide office, particularly the lieutenant governor's office.

Then a few days later, he said some people were suggesting he aim higher and run for governor. On Monday, he told Birmingham radio station WERC he had been "very surprised" by all of the mail and inquiries he had received about a possible bid for public office, but he's not inclined to do it. "I don't think it's in my nature to do that. My life is too dang simple to get it complicated, and that would certainly complicate it," Dye said. Dye, who held the reins at Auburn during 1981-92, guided Tiger teams that won or shared four Southeastern Conference championships and split 6-6 with archrival Alabama earning him fame among Auburn fans before a pay-for-play scandal forced him out in 1992.

He currently works for Auburn's President William Muse as special assistant to the president. Dye said toying with politics had been "interesting and kind of eyeopening. If the politicians really knew how the people feel, they'd be more concerned about the people and less about themselves." Anniston man shoots baby, then kills himself, police say ASSOCIATED PRESS TALLADEGA An Anniston man took his 6-month-old daughter out of day-care Monday morning, then drove to the home of child's mother, where he shot the girl and himself, police said. Jerome Cunningham, 33, and 6- month-old Juleah Sade Dates died in the murder-suicide despite the efforts of police to get him to surrender the child, Acting Police Chief Capt. Joe Hare said.

Cunningham was separated from Sade's mother, he said. Police aren't sure what prompted the abduction and shooting. At the mobile home where Sade lived with her mother, negotiators talked with Cunningham for about 10 minutes as he sat in his car with the baby, but never established a good line of communication, Hare said. Finally, Cunningham abruptly picked up a 9mm pistol and shot Sade and himself, he said. Cunningham died at the scene of a chest wound.

Sade died at a hospital about 9:20 a.m. The police were called after Cunningham showed up at Sade's daycare center about 7:12 a.m. Monday to pick her up. Hare said day-care workers were concerned because it's unusual for one parent to drop a child off and the other parent to come pick the child up within such a short time. Emergency declared in 4 counties ASSOCIATED PRESS Gov.

Fob James declared a state of emergency in Jefferson, Shelby, Blount and St. Clair counties Monday in response to damage from tornadoes and storms. The four counties had widespread power outages after the weekend storms. "The widespread power outages affect the health, safety and economy of these communities, and we will provide aid to them as quickly as possible," James said in a statement released by his press office. The governor is in Israel on a trade mission.

James also directed the Alabama Emergency Management Agency to conduct a damage assessment in the areas. The governor's assistant press secretary, David Azbell, said no other counties with damage from tornadoes or high winds had asked for a declaration of a state of emergency.
