THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1977 Ute Montgomery Advertiser PAGE Would Lower Fares WASHINGTON (AP) Less regulation of the domestic airline industry would result in lower fares for passengers, according to a study released Wednesday by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. Conducted by the General Accounting Office, the study concluded that a reduction in federal regulation of airlines during a six-year period would have resulted in fare reductions ranging from 22 to 52 per cent. "Our study offers reliable evidence that lines could have profitably operated at a lower cost per passenger during the six years from 1969 to 1974, resulting in lower fares and therefore savings to domestic air travelers on the order of $1.4 billion to $1.8 billion a year," the GAO said.

The GAO add that "the tradeoff for lower fares would have been less space for some passengers and fewer flights on some routes." Kennedy and Sen. Howard W. Cannon, have introduced a bill to reduce the regulation of airlines by the Civil Aeronautics Board. GAO study dramatizes a pressing need for quick action by the Congress," said the Massachusetts Democrat. "It would be irresponsible to continue to tolerate an outmoded regulatory system Eight-Foot Patient Gets Cancer Treatment Sled Vet Amanda Gaverick, an 85-yearold widow better known as Aunt Mandy to her friends, prepares to go sledding near her Morris, home.

Reduction that taxes the nation's business and pleasure travelers with high air The GAO noted that the CAB was on record as favoring a reduction in regulation. The report said the board has recommended that Congress "pass legislation facilitating creation and certification of new airlines, permitting new and existing airlines to more freely enter or leave particular markets, and allowing airlines increasing freedom to raise or lower "We believe it is questionable whether many communities would lose air service if CAB regulation were reduced or discontinued." the GAO study said. The GAO report also said it was reasonable to fear that "there will be a considerable change in the industry and some economic disorder if regulation were significantly changed Efficient airlines would put considerable competitive pressure on less efficient airlines that are now protected by regulation." To reduce the impact of a sudden shift in the regulatory pattern, the GAO recommended that changes be introduced gradually over a transition period Blount Company Gets 2 Contracts Blount headquartered in Montgomery, has been awarded two construction contracts totaling $16 million.
