The first deadline passed shortly before 9 p.m. The gunman then told negotiators that they had another five minutes to deliver the crew to the freshly fueled plane.

FBI spokesman Frank Perrone said the man then said he would release his captives when the crew came aboard. He said he wanted the crew to leave flight bags outside the plane so he could inspect them before they entered the plane. Officials said that no one was injured by' the shot. No passengers were aboard the plane, they said. "Apparently he emphasized his demand for food and clothing by firing one round into the air," said an airport spokesman.

"He didn't aim it at anybody." The shot came just after a friend had boarded the plane at the request of the Officials said the cockpit was virtually awash with blood as the would-be hijacker pressed his demands to be taken to "the East Coast," an airport spokesman said. There was no further indication what destination the gunman identified by the airline as Palm Hinnant, 37 had in mind. "Listen, I'm here to testify he means it," said Funk on a radio communication monitored by reporters. "Can't we do' something in good faith because Palm is dead serious." A few minutes later, Hinnant took the microphone to declare: "I mean business. I know Dick Funk knows I mean business, but I'm not sure anybody else does." The gunman was seeking to obtain a flight crew to pilot his pirated aircraft and "setting a new deadline every ten minutes," said information officer Warren Hanson.

He reportedly set one deadline for arrival of the SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A United Airlines mechanic on extended sick leave took two hostages at gunpoint and commandeered an empty DC8 jetliner Tuesday, slashing one of his captives when authorities did not move fast enough to meet his demands for a flight crew. The report of the injury to hostage Richard Funk came after the increasingly impatient gunman fired a shot inside the aircraft to underscore his demands for food and clothing. The food and a demanded bottle of brandy was delivered. Five hours after the siege at San Francisco International Airport began, Funk was reported bleeding profusely and pleading with authorities via radio to end his Funk, a fellow airline employe, said his captor would "start cutting again" unless his demands were met. A dining table, armchairs, two settees and a large oval mirror from Lucan's home in the swank Belgravia district of London also will go under the hammer, probably in Marc'd, trustee Dennis Gilson said. Richard John Bingham, the seventh Earl of Lucan, disappeared Nov. 7, 1974, the night his children's nanny, Sandra Rivett, was beaten to death in London at the home of his estranged wife. The following June a coroner's jury named Lucan as the killer and Scotland Yard issued a murder warrant for his arrest. There was speculation Lucan fled abroad or committed suicide.

"The contents of the house have been split 50-50 between Lord and Lady Lucan," Gilson said'. Lucan, 42, reportedly has debts estimated at from to $119,000. Gilson, the accountant who has handled the estate since Lucan disappeared, has already made a first payment to creditors of about 70 per cent. It went to banks, gambling clubs, a department store and the gas company. Syrian Troops in Action BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) Syrian peace force troops went into action for the first time in the six-week-old truce Tuesday to quell Palestinian guerrilla units fighting each other in Beirut.

Clashes were also reported between Christian and Moslem Lebanese forces in the tense southern area next to the Israeli border while Israeli gunboats and coastal guerrilla bwteries by the southern port city of Tyre also exchanged fire for the second day running. The most serious fighting developed between rival Palestinian guerrillas belonging to the pro-Syrian Saiqa and the anti Syrian, radical "rejection front" in the Beirut area. It erupted in the predawn hours in several refugee cps strung along the southern outukirts of the capital near Beirut nternational airport. This waslhe second intraguerrilla clash in six days. To prevent a general conklagration spilling over into the pacified Christian kd Moslem sectors of the city, tanks and troops of the Syrian-dominated Arab League peace force moved promptly to end the fighting.

Unconfirmed reports said the Syrians opened fire repeatedly at Palestinian positions to impose a ceasefire. Heavy gunfire and explosions shook the area around the airport for nearly five hours before a cease-fire was eventually arranged. Preliminary reports said casualties Were heavy, but there Was no official count. 12 14 mi Air 10 Pseiv Oilfield Discovered LONDON AP) Mesa Petroleum of Texas announced Tuesday it has struck a new North Sea oilfield off northeast Scotland that industry sources say could be a major discovery. Industry reports indicated the field could have recoverable reserves of up to 500 million barrels. Mesa said the second of two wells drilled in block 11-30 hit oil 15 miles off the Moray Firth in 135 feet of water. The well is producing 6,197 barrels a day above average for exploratory North Sea strikes. The major significance of the new discovery is that is closer to shore than most big fields in the British sector and in shallower water than other producing areas.

The average North Sea well is in 400 feet of water. These factors, the sources said, could make the new field a commercial proposition on the basis oi smaller reserves than deep-water fields, since production costs will be lower. The new field is close to the, site of the proposed Cromarty Firth refinery at Nigg, which could be completed by 1980 if the $288 million project is approved. Mesa has a 25 per cent stake in the consortium it heads. Its partners are Kerr-McGee Corp.

with 25 per cent, Hunt Oil with 15 per cent, Petroleum with 15 per cent, Creslenn Chelsea With 15 per cent and Exploration Holdings Corp. with 5 per cent. CORN JR. TEAM CAPTAIN meant to bid four diamonds' which showed a similar hand with a spade suit." So North "corrected" to four spades. South trusted his partner and assumed that four spades was a cue bid inviting a slam in hearts and showing first round control in spades. Slam? Why not? And South cooperated by cue bidding his club ace. At this point North was convinced that South had forgotten the system and he passed! The hand was played in silence and declarer managed to take four tricks, down seven, and 700 points to the opponents.

Little was said at the table as it's always best to correct these misunderstandings after the play is over. And after the scores were com-, pared, the "great many trou-' bles" transformed themselves into a humorous experience. The Israeli East-West pair had played six spades from the East side and scored 1430 points by taking a winning diamond finesse! After picking up 730 points on the deal, it must have been much easier to discuss the ramifications of future specialized preemptive bids. Bid with Corn South holds: 9 3 2 I6 TA 7 K.Q 10 4 1 South 1 North 1 Answer: Two spades. A hefty hand for the single raise but still a shade light for a jump to three spades.

Optimists will jump to three spades and I find it difficult to quarrel with that choice. Send bridge question! to The Aca, P.O. Bon 12M1. Dallas, Texal 75229, with telf-addreued stamped envelope for reply. Copyright.

"I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them have never happened." Mark Twain.

In the 1976 World Bridge Team Olympics played in Monaco, an Israeli pair suffered one misunderstanding after another and they staggered blindly into an inglorious contract that was down seven! However, as the man said, "While this pair knew of a great many troubles, actually they never happened." (If you think there's a misprint in the bidding, wait a moment and I will explain.) The "guilty" Israeli pair reported this story to Joe Amsbury of England who stands on his constitutional rights not to reveal his sources. Good enough, we really don't have to know who it was to appreciate the humor involved. South opened four clubs which, by prior system agreement, described a slam oriented four heart opening a very powerful suit and outside controls. North looked at his own hearts and decided that South had a lapse of memory "South obviously had MYLANTA. Effective AntacidAnti-Gas good taste fast action LIQUID NOW miUBlE AT PRICE DRUGS 15 IK ST.

76U451 1 12 0L $159 Boxer Found Guilty PATERSON. N.J. (AP) Rubin "Hurricane" Carter and John Artis each Were found guilty of three counts of first degree murder here Tuesday. The jury deliberated 9 hours and 15 minutes before returning the verdict at 9 p.m. in the retrial of Carter, a former middleweight boxer, and his codefendant.

Carter and Artis were convicted of murder in 1967. They spent nine years in prison before the New Jersey Supreme Court ordered a new trial this year, ruling that the prosecution withheld evidence from the defense at the first trial. In charging the. jury, Superior Court Judge Bruno Leopizzi referred to testimony by Alfred Bello, the only witness to place Carter and Artis at the Lafayette Bar Grill where three persons were murdered in a shootout 10 years ago. Bello later retracted the identifications, then changed his mind about the retraction.

Bello has said he and a companion Were breaking into a nearby factory when he saw two black men running from the tavern after the shootout. He said he stole money from the bar's cash register before police arrived. f9. 35' WHITMAN MINIATURE SAMPLERS 3 FOR II' DIXIE DRUGS CASTBROOK SHOPPING CT. BLNG, Mrs.
