(AP) Cattle aren't the only animals going hungry because of the hay shortage -elephants, rhinoceroses and giraffes also need a share of the dwindling supplies, a Knoxville Zoo official said Thursday. "We need hay as much as the farmers," said Randy Wolfe, associate zoo director. Many of the zoo's hoofed animals spend most of their time chewing hay and altogether consume about 25 at 2 p.m. in Oakwodd Cemetery with Father Wilbur Kissell officiating. White Chapel directing.

Selma Mayor Joe Smitherman introduced several black members of the city's Police Department and said they illustrate the racial changes during the past 20 years. "We've got problems, but we're working blacks and whites together to solve them," Smitherman Said. Gaston's appearance was delayed several minutes so he couldreceive a massage arranged by Selma industrialist Larry Striplin.

His mention of that brought loud laughter from the audience of 350 and he exchanged quips with admirers after the program. "I didn't want to embarrass the mayor during the program, but I remember Selma as a rough town when I was young," Gaston said. (continued from IOC) ey," he said. "We got it just like other folks got it. It's a matter of using it in the right way.

"You can make it whether you are black or white or what side of the tracks you were born on, if you follow the rules, touch all the bases," he added. Gaston's involvement in the civil rights movement during the 1960s made national headlines. The motel bearing his name in Birmingham was where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. stayed.

i The Gaston Motel was the only black-owned motel in Birmingham at that time and was the object of more than one bomb threat. urn August 9 Whitt Choptl Police Stopped Investigation After Man's Request, Attorney Says (continued from 10C) his "lack of professionalism" in his handling of the investigation. He also said he was concerned the Buchanans' statements may be used in court. Armstead said the "only way their statements would make it into court would be for someone to subpoena our records." Buchanan was convicted May 26 in Montgomery Municipal Court on charges of resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and two counts of disorderly conduct, and received a 120-day sentence. Canine 'Out of FLORENCE (AP) A judge Thursday dismissed a suit that claimed a mixed-breed dog impregnated a pedigree cocker spaniel. Lauderdale County District Judge Deborah Bell Paseur dismissed the suit, which had been filed by Allen Wilson against a neighbor, Kathryn Wallace.

Wilson, who had asked for $1,000, claimed that Wallace's dog Brownie climbed a five-foot fence and an eight-foot barrier and impregnated a spaniel he had planned to breed with another spaniel. Larry Moore, Wallace's attorney, said that Wilson decided to drop the charges. An appeal will be held Aug. 19 in Montgomery County Circuit Court. Armstead declined to release documents about the incident, saying it would "be unfair to Mr.

Buchanan. With only the statements of the officers, it sounds one-sided." Foxworth said he is concentrating on the Buchanans' appeal but added legal action against the police department has not been ruled out. In the fight with officers P.E. O'Neal and R.A. McCall, Buchanan suffered a cut above the right eye that required 14 stitches and scars and bruises "all over his body," Fox-worth said.

Doghouse' Wilson said later he did so "in the interest of goodwill." "All I know is," Moore said, "is that Brownie has been acquitted. He's finally out of the doghouse, so to speak, and even though he's going back to a dog's life, it's his life." "I am glad it ended this way," Wallace said, "but the whole thing was suspect. Even Wilson told me he didn't catch the dogs doing anything, so only the dogs know for sure." Wallace said she has kept Brownie because her late husband, an invalid who got the dog for company, was so devoted to him. She also had said she and Wilson were not aggravated at each other. But this year a southeastern drought that has dried pastures and forced some farmers to sell livestock early also has cut into the zoo's sup plies, he said. The zoo needs 7,000 bales to feed the animals through May, but cur rently has only 3,000 bales, he said. "Right now we're just being conservative with the hay we have while still meeting the animals needs, Wolfe said. "And that's not easy." Hal P.
